Trent Severn Waterway - Part 1

  The Trent – Severn Waterway, a National Historic site of Canada is a natural and manmade waterway that meanders nearly 400 km (279 miles) across central Ontario, linking Georgian Bay to the Bay of Quinte. During our travels we will transit all 45 locks on the system including the Peterborough and Kirkfield lift locks as well as the Big Chute Marine Railway. Built in 1904 the Peterborough Lift Lock remains an engineering achievement of international renown because it was the highest hydraulic lift lock ever built and was once reputed to be the largest concrete structure in the world. We departed the marina to catch the first lockage at 9am at Lock 1. Travelling 14 miles, we transited 7 locks on day one, tying up on the top side of Glen Ross lock for the night. Trenton Ontario, the Start of the Trent Severn Waterway

  Kingston & Trenton Ontario Prior to reaching Trenton and lock one, we stopped in Kingston for a visit with our oldest son, and some of his Trenton high school friends and their parents. Some of whom, we had not seen in about 35 years.   Next day we arrived at the Trent Port Marina, where we would leave our boat for a few days while we flew out to Winnipeg for the high school graduation of our #3 grandson. The city of Trenton has done itself proud. The marina is one of the finest, modern, clean facilities that we have encountered in our many years of cruising. Not only do they cater to the needs and comforts of visiting cruisers, they did a great job of encompassing a beautiful park and venue for the citizens of Trenton. We spent 4 days in Winnipeg, attending Tanner’s graduation dinner and later his convocation. Now a whole new world opens up for him. Can't wait to see where life takes him.
