Onancock VA to Solomon’s Island MD

Onancock VA to Solomon’s Island MD

We departed at 5:30am the following morning to capitalize on fair seas and calm winds. For once, the weatherman was accurate, and we had a good, smooth ride.

The Solomon’s Island Yacht Club had no space available the day we arrived, so we found a protected, peaceful anchorage up the Saint Leonard Creek.

Next morning the Yacht Club had space available for us.

Upon our arrival, everyone was very welcoming and friendly. Dockage was inexpensive at $2/foot, and you get 2 free drinks when the bar opens at 4pm. Now that is Southern hospitality!

Solomon’s Island is very busy with pleasure vessels due to having several marinas in the same bay.

The weather was dull and cool with heavy rain forecast by noon. Needing several boat parts, we took an Uber to West Marine and a boat yard, where we found most of what we needed.

After happy hour in the Yacht Club Bar, we walked next door for a great seafood dinner at the Island Hideaway Restaurant.

During the night, we experienced a rare, not forecasted 30 knot wind from the south-east, which blew right into the bay. All the boats rocked, rolled and tugged at their lines for several hours, ensuring little sleep for everyone. Thankfully, we were well fendered, securely tied and experienced no damage. It was however, the roughest night we have spent tied to a dock in our thirty plus years of cruising. Good news was no-one was hurt and no animals were harmed.

Aside from the weather, it was a delightful stay at the Solomon’s Island Yacht Club.

Next destination is planned for Oxford or St Michaels on the eastern shore of the bay.
