Norfolk to Cape Charles Virginia

Norfolk to Cape Charles VA (Eastern shore of Chesapeake Bay)

It was a busy and exhilarating morning as we departed Waterside Marina in Norfolk.

The Navy shipyards are always busy, but this morning we were lucky enough to witness a navy destroyer returning to home port after deployment.

The flags were proudly displayed, the sailors were lined along the outer decks and the ship was followed by the fire boat, out to welcome the ship home.

Shortly after passing the homecoming ship, we were contacted by the security boats, requesting that vessels move outside of the channel to accommodate a submarine returning to home port. This is not a sight one sees every day.

We arrived at the Town Dock Marina in Cape Charles about four hours after leaving Norfolk. The town of Cape Charles is artsy and quaint. The downtown is just a short walk from the marina.

We were less than impressed with the marina. No one ever answered the phone or the VHF radio, so no help with slip assignment or lines. At $3.25 per foot for dockage, we expected at least some service. No-one answered any phone calls or VHF calls. We received no slip assignment, so like fellow Loopers, we selected an empty slip. When we went to the office to check in, there were 3 staff members sitting chatting. As Alan says, he votes with his wallet. We will not be back at this marina.
