Cape Charles to Onancock VA

Cape Charles to Onancock VA

Seas were rougher than we had hoped but were predicted to die down as we proceeded northward up Chesapeake Bay to Onancock. The seas did flatten some, but the ride was still rougher than we like.

Our original destination was Crisfield on the East Coast of the Chesapeake but after some research, we opted to shorten our day and make Onancock our spot for the night.

What a lovely little marina and delightful town!

The marina manager was knowledgeable and most helpful. The historic downtown and town wharf are charming.

The historic Hopkins & Bro General Store is now home to Mallard’s Waterside Restaurant.

We ate here on Saturday evening and the food was outstanding. The crab cake was one of the very best I have had, so much so, I had the crabcake appetizer, followed by the crabcake entrée. The food, ambience and service were so good, we were lured back the next evening for Mother’s Day dinner.

This small, idyllic town features many gorgeous, older homes.

Each home has manicured lawns and beautiful flowering roses and bushes. Pride of ownership is evident. Time permitting, I would be happy to stay for several days, but we need to travel when weather conditions are favorable, so departure will be at dawn tomorrow morning.

The marina has a courtesy car, a retired police cruiser for visitors to use to obtain provisions and boat supplies. First two hours are complimentary and a $10 fee for any time in excess of two hours. Needless to say, we took advantage since we needed some necessary boat parts.

  1. Thanks again for a wonderful post and great pictures. You may recall we lived in Hampton VA (SE of Newport News) for a time in the '60s. Your pictures brought back so many memories - they could have been from there. Thanks again. Have fun, travel safely. Art & Beth
